The Academic Freedom Bill Passed Out of its First Senate Committee
March 27, 2008
Staff
Thanks to your phone calls, faxes and e-mails, the Academic Freedom bill passed out of the K-12 Senate Education Committee yesterday, March 26, 2008, in Tallahassee.  The bill was amended with some favorable amendments and then passed by a 4-1 margin.  Thank you, thank you, thank you, for your great response.  Sen. Ted Deutch, D-Boca Raton, was the lone dissent. Sens. Lisa Carlton, Alex Diaz de la Portilla, Steve Wise, and Larcenia Bullard voted for it. Committee Chairman Don Gaetz and Vice Chairwoman Frederica Wilson were absent.  It now has to pass out of the Senate Judiciary Committee and other House Committees before getting on the full floor of both houses.  The purpose of the bill is to protect public school teachers who present scientific evidence critical of Darwinism and evolution.  We will keep you updated as these new hearings approach.

We now need to hear from public school K-12 science teachers or students about any of the following:

1) Have you ever been confronted, reprimanded, or given a directive, for criticizing evolution or presenting scientific evidence critical of Darwinism?

2)
In light of the new dogmatic evolution standards recently passed by the Board of Education, ("Evolution is the fundamental concept underlying all of biology and is supported by multiple forms of evidence.") do you feel that you are free to give critical analysis of evolution in the classroom and not be confronted or disciplined?

3) Do you feel that there is a hostile environment generally in your school toward those who dissent or disagree with evolution or Darwinism?

4) Do you have legitimate fears about what would happen to you if you criticized evolution in light of the new dogmatic standards?

If you as a teacher or a student have stories, experiences or opinions on any of these topics, please e-mail us at

BREAKING AND RELEVANT  WORLD NEWS:
On March 1, 2008, FFPC President, John Stemberger sent out an editorial he wrote in response to the Orlando Sentinel's editorial opinion that evolution was "widely accepted as fact", -- which the Sentinel refused to publish.  In the editorial, Stemberger argued that "In very high academic circles, macro-evolutionary theory is in a state of crisis and intellectual collapse." Only 3 days later, an article was published which publicly discussed for the first time a major world science conference to be held in Altenberg, Austria, in July, 2008, with leading secular evolutionists, philosophers and scientists to develop new theory of evolution.  The invitation to this scientific conference states, "We are also grappling with the increasing feeling...that we just don't have the theoretical and analytical tools necessary to make sense of the bewildering diversity and complexity of living organisms...We think this very well could turn into a major stepping stone for the entire field of evolutionary biology."  Stay tuned for more updates on this stunning and critical development.
